When Christianity spread throughout the region in the 16th century, Mexican artwork was irreversibly altered and became primarily representative of Christian principles and values.
Mexicans were free to once again pursue the unusual and bright varieties of Mexican artwork that appear to define the region after Spanish rule was removed in the early 1900s.
