Nicolene Burger – Artist, Creative Consultant, Art Writer
Background and General
Nicolene Burger is a multimedia artist and creative consultant from South Africa, primarily specializing in oil painting and performance art. She obtained her BA in Fine and Studio Arts from Stellenbosch University in 2017. In 2018, Nicolene exhibited her work in Masan, South Korea, as part of the Rhizome Artist Residency program and was selected to participate in the 2019 ICA Live Art Workshop, receiving training from art experts worldwide. In the same year, she opened her first solo exhibition titled “Painted Mantras” at GUS Gallery and facilitated a group collaboration project called “Take Flight,” which was featured in the Infecting the City Live Art Festival. Currently, Nicolene is pursuing a practice-based master’s degree in Theatre and Performance at the University of Cape Town.
In 2020, Nicolene collaborated with Lumkile Mzayiya to create a series of ZOOM performances titled “Evoked?”. These performances inspired her to produce exclusive works from her home in 2021 to engage with the mid-pandemic audience. Over the past three years, she has also shifted her focus towards promoting the sustainability of creative practices and now offers creative coaching sessions to artists of all kinds. Through her ten years of experience, Nicolene aims to convey the vulnerability inherent in her art-making process and her core belief that art is a profoundly significant and powerful means of communication, capable of offering understanding, healing, and connection.
