The appearance of animals in paintings has long been associated with heavy symbolism surrounding very human themes. Animals have been the subject of many famous paintings just as much as humans have taken up the center stage as models. The painting depicts a tiger, which is only highlighted by the flash of lightning as it prepares to catch its prey. This famous tiger painting received mixed reviews when first exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants.

Although his approach to composition was criticized as being naive and childish, his work was also admired by Swiss artists like Félix Vallotton, who was soon to be a major influential figure in modern woodcut practices.

The motif of the tiger was originally inspired by the artwork of Eugène Delacroix and was thought to be an image of a memory from the artist’s time in the jungle in Mexico in 1860. It was later found that the artist never left France and that the inspiration for the image was derived from the local Parisian botanical gardens, which contained zoological galleries with specimens of exotic creatures and taxidermy.

The tiger has also been one of the most frequently depicted animals in art.

Le Chat Blanc (1894) by Pierre Bonnard

Date 1894
Medium Oil on cardboard
Dimensions (cm)51.9 x 33.5
Where It Is HousedMusée d’Orsay, Paris, France

Pierre Bonnard is considered one of the pioneering members of the post-Impressionist group called the Les Nabis as well as one of the most famous animal artists. Bonnard was also a key contributor to the Impressionist movement who championed modern and expressive painting techniques. His works feature bold brushstrokes with vivid color palettes that were inspired by artists like Paul Gauguin and Japanese woodblock prints. Bonnard also had a keen eye for design, which helped him create intimate scenes of urban and domestic environments.

This is perhaps one of the most famous animal paintings by Bonnard that captures the distorted image of a white cat.

The cat is seen oddly arching its back with its head facing down towards its shoulders and donning a cunning expression. Bonnard paints the cat in such a way that it appears as though the cat is both wild and tame. The position of the cat’s paws and shape was given quite a bit of attention and can be seen in some of Bonnard’s preparatory drawings. X-rays of the painting reveal that Bonnard had made many changes to the cat with some previous markings already being visible to the naked eye.

Today, Bonnard’s image of a white cat has become a caricature through its excellent use of sinuous lines and the absence of any depth for the cat’s body. It is believed that Bonnard was also inspired by Japanese artists like Hokusai and Kuniyoshi who often painted feline subjects. Bonnard’s use of asymmetrical compositions and the decorative nature of the animal painting is also characteristic of the Nabi tradition.

Bonnard was known to produce numerous paintings that featured cats, rendered via simple details yet displaying a lot of character.

Dufresne was also a sculptor and engraver who was raised by a family of fishermen and sailors. Although his subjects were not solely dedicated to animals, his depiction of this scene with a soldier on a white horse being attacked by a lion makes clear his interest in Cubist painting.

In the small painting, the lion is seen pouncing on the horse with its full might while the soldier struggles to stay on.

Like Pablo Picasso, Klee was also devoted to his love for cats and beautifully captures the simple yet intriguing nature of cats that seem to capture our hearts.

Klee strove towards cultivating the purity of painting itself through simple uses of lines, colors, and shapes as elements on their own as opposed to the execution of something visible. By illustrating the cat with a large head, it becomes the main subject of the painting and stresses the focus on the cat’s mind and its desire for the bird. The red heart representing the cat’s nose is also a symbol of the cat’s desire.

Klee’s childlike approach to execution is also what amplifies the striking visual nature of this famous animal painting.

Munch even took his dogs with him to the cinema and if his dogs barked too much during a film, then it was a sign to Munch that the film was probably bad and it was time for him to leave. His strong attachment to these friendly creatures is what inspired this painting of a pooch. Perhaps it can be called a portrait of a pooch, Munch portrays the dog without a hint of its neck in an Expressionist style.

While including many bright colors on the right of the painting, Munch also contrasts this with many darker colors on the left side of the portrait.

Green and black appear to be very dominant colors around the dog’s ears, eyes, and head while orange and red shades appear on the other side. Over the years, many artists have recreated this image of a dog, including Édouard Manet. Before this painting, Munch also displayed his interest in dogs and these can be thought of as insight into his inner psychological world.
